Benedictine University offers new nursing degree

Lisle-based Benedictine University and Triton College have announced a partnership that will allow graduates of Triton College's associate degree nursing program to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing from Benedictine at Triton's River Grove campus.

The Benedictine bachelor of science in nursing is an accelerated, one-year program.

"The program emphasizes critical thinking, focuses on giving the student the knowledge and the tools to make sound decisions and helps students develop the self-confidence to take their careers to the next level," said Ethel C. Ragland, chair of the department of nursing and health at Benedictine.

Classes will be offered in an evening and weekend format at Triton College's University Center beginning in August. The program offers a private education at a tuition competitive with state schools.

Doctor, nurse separated from hospital in lawsuit

A doctor and a nurse were separated from Bedford County Medical Center as defendants in a medical malpractice case that's sought at least $2.5 million over the death of a man who sought treatment at the hospital's emergency room.

The ruling came Thursday from Bedford County Circuit Court Judge Lee Russell in the case brought by the widow and children of Samuel Harrison Butcher III, who died on Sept. 4, 2004, three days before his 29th birthday, according to the complaint filed by the plaintiffs' attorney, Russell Thomas of Murfreesboro.

Named in the original complaint as defendants are Dr. Kent Clark, a nurse named only as L. Brashier in the complaint, the hospital, and Quorum Health Resources LLC which was the hospital's management service hired by Bedford County before the facility was sold in July 2005.

Slim pickings in search for orchard workers

A Labour shortage has been declared to help kiwifruit growers cope with the upcoming picking season as Bay packhouses are still 300 workers short.

A total of 381 seasonal vacancies were listed with Work and Income as of yesterday but only 41 unemployed people were available to fill them.

Clive Exelby, Aongatete Coolstores Ltd packhouse manager, said the lack of labour was a major difficulty in the upcoming season.

He returned three days ago from a trip to Southeast Asia to search for workers.

"I don't just go to Southeast Asia, we could also look in Tonga, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Brazil," Mr Exelby said.

Famed G spot doc now recommends other hot spots

Sexuality researcher Beverly Whipple made her name a quarter century ago popularizing the "G spot," the elusive female erogenous zone, but she has a different message these days: Move on.

"There's so many ways that women can have sexual pleasure," Whipple said. "We can't deny the experiences of women. We have to validate them."

Lesson number one: The biggest sexual organ really is the brain.
